Early Signs of Pregnancy

If you're trying to get pregnant, it's helpful to know the early signs of pregnancy; so, we'll list the most important ones below.

What are the early signs of pregnancy?

Missed menstrual period:
If you have a regular menstrual cycle but your period has not arrived as expected, there's a strong indication of pregnancy. This usually means that a week or more has passed since your period was due to start.
However, if you have an irregular cycle, meaning that the length of time between your periods varies greatly, a missed period is not necessarily a sign of pregnancy.
Breast tenderness:
Many women find that their breasts become larger and more tender before their period starts. However, the same thing can also happen in the early stages of pregnancy! You may also notice that the veins in your breasts are more visible, and your nipples darken.
Nausea and vomiting:
We've all heard of morning sickness during early pregnancy, but not everyone knows that vomiting and nausea can affect you at any time of the day.
Most women experience morning sickness within four to six weeks of pregnancy. However, some women may experience nausea earlier, while others may not experience nausea at all.
Fatigue:
Extreme fatigue is a common symptom throughout pregnancy, especially in the first 12 weeks.
Changes in the frequency of urination and bowel movements:
During pregnancy, you may find that you need to urinate frequently, including at night. You may also find that you are experiencing more constipation than usual.
Changes in taste and smell:
Pregnancy can sometimes affect how we eat and what we crave because it causes changes in our taste and smell senses.

Is spotting an early sign of pregnancy?

As we mentioned, missing a period is usually the most obvious sign of early pregnancy. However, this symptom can be complicated by something called implantation bleeding. Implantation is where the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus, causing light bleeding or spotting as a result. Implantation bleeding typically occurs 10 to 14 days after conception.

Is vaginal discharge an early sign of pregnancy?

Yes, you may notice more vaginal discharge than usual, but it should not be accompanied by any pain or irritation.
Vaginal discharge with a different color or an unpleasant odor could be a sign of bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted infections.

What do you do if you think you're pregnant?

If you've noticed some of the symptoms we've mentioned and think you might be pregnant, the first thing to do is to take a home pregnancy test, which is available in pharmacies and easy to use at home.
Most home pregnancy tests are designed to be used on the first day of a missed period. Other women, however, are more sensitive, and pregnancy can be detected as early as eight days after conception.
A positive result on a home pregnancy test is more likely to be true.
A negative result is unlikely to be accurate, so it's usually recommended to wait a few days and take a second test. If your tests continue to come back negative but your period hasn't come yet, you can head to your nearest lab to take a blood pregnancy test.

What do you do if you have a positive pregnancy test?

Seek medical assistance throughout your pregnancy and make sure you are closely monitored to ensure your health and your baby's health.
